Description
Antonio Gomez is a 23-year old catching prospect in the New York Yankees Organization. Gomez had one of the strongest arms in the 2018 international class, which helped earn him a $600,000 bonus out of Venezuela. A left triceps injury curtailed his pro debut a year later and precluded him from participating in the Yankees’ Dominican instructional league program following the 2020 pandemic shutdown. He reached full-season ball late last August and hit .197/.310/.328 in 17 Low-A games.
Not only does Gomez get top-of-the-scale arm grades from some evaluators, but he also unloads his throws quickly and accurately while recording pop times as low as 1.8 seconds. Though he’s a well below-average runner, he’s athletic behind the plate and shows promise and is steadily improving as a receiver and blocker. With his leadership skills and ability to speak both Spanish and English, he does a nice job of running a pitching staff.
Gomez offers raw right-handed power and shows a willingness to work counts and projects as a solid big league hitter who could potentially hit 20-25 home runs per season. The future is bright for the New York Yankees Prospect!
