Colby Gossett is a free agent offensive tackle most recently playing for the New Orleans Saints. He was drafted by the Vikings in the 6th Round of the 2018 NFL Draft. Gossett played his college football for the Appalachian State Mountaineers. In high school, Gossett was rated as a two-star prospect by Rivals.com playing both offensive tackle and defensive end as a prep standout. Coached by Blair Armstrong, Gossett earned first-team all-region recognition as an offensive lineman and notched 42 tackles and three sacks defensively as a senior. Gossett has also been a member of the Cleveland Browns, Minnesota Vikings, Arizona Cardinals, New England Patriots and Atlanta Falcons.
Colby Gossett was just an unheralded two-star recruit out of Cumming, Georgia when he arrived on the Appalachian campus. A 2018 All Sun Belt first-team selection, Gossett was a strong and versatile lineman and a true anchor for Appalachian State over the course of his career. Starting all 13 games in 2017, Gossett was a consistent frontman to pave the way for Taylor Lamb and Jalin Moore. He also was an All Sun Belt Selection his junior season in 2016.
The powerful offensive tackle really started to resonate on NFL radars in 2016 when he held up pretty well in marquee games against Power Five foes Tennessee and Miami. During his time in Boone, Gossett has shown the ability to change positions on the line and still succeeded, as multiple times during his career he would change from guard to tackle. Experience is going to be one of the main selling points on Gossett and rightfully so as 46 straight starts speaks for itself. His body build with a broad waist, thick calves and his ability to take on rushing defensive ends are positive signs for his potential in the NFL.
Gossett became the third App State player picked for the Reese’s Senior Bowl, joining receivers and second-round draft picks Brian Quick (2012 draft) and Dexter Jackson.(2008 draft) App State ranked in the top 20 nationally in sacks allowed and the top 25 in rushing yards per game in each of Gossett’s four seasons as a starter. The Mountaineers also ranked No. 2 nationally in 2017 with only eight sacks allowed, and they were 22nd nationally by rushing for 223.6 yards per game. Gossett was an integral part of that success.
The 2018 Senior Bowl was an all-star college football exhibition game featuring players from the 2017 NCAA Division I FBS football season, and prospects for the 2018 draft of the professional National Football League (NFL). The game was the last of the 2017–18 bowl games and the final game of the 2017 FBS football season. It was sponsored by Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups and was officially known as the Reese’s Senior Bowl. The game was played on January 27th, 2018, at 1:30 p.m. CST, at Ladd–Peebles Stadium in Mobile, Alabama, between “North” and “South” teams; coverage of the event was provided by NFL Network. The annual college all-star game allows players to wear their college helmets one last time.
Colby Gossett capped his college career in strong fashion by performing well at the Reese’s Senior Bowl. The South Team blew out the North Team in the Senior Bowl, 45-16, despite having an unheralded roster that didn’t feature the headliners of the day, Baker Mayfield and Josh Allen. Richmond quarterback Kyle Lauretta was named the Senior Bowl MVP throwing for 198 yards and three touchdowns to put the game on ice. Competing in the nation’s highest-profile college all-star game, Gossett helped the South team amass 540 total yards. Gossett received praise from many analysts, including former App State quarterback Daniel Jeremiah, who works for the NFL Network. Gossett also contributed to Rashaad Penny rushing nine times for 64 yards, including a 31-yard gain.
