Description
Coleman Crow is a pitcher in the Milwaukee Brewers Organization. He was drafted in the 28th Round of the 2019 MLB Draft by the Los Angeles Angels. Crow was selected by the Angels out of Pike County High School in Zebulon, Georgia. He originally committed to Kennesaw State but chose to sign with the Angels and begin his professional career. Crow was traded along with Landon Marceaux by the Angels to the New York Mets on June 25th, 2023 for Eduardo Escobar. On December 20th, 2023 Crow was traded from the NY Mets to Milwaukee for right-hander Adrian Houser and outfielder Tyrone Taylor.
Crow began his professional career in 2021 with Low-A Inland Empire and was 4-3 with a 4.19 ERA in 13 games (10 starts) for the 66ers. At the conclusion of the 2021 Season, Crow participated in the Arizona Fall League. Despite being the youngest pitcher there at age 20, he was dominant with a 1.59 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and a 20-to-2 strikeout-to-walk ratio over 17 innings in the AFL.
He made his Double-A debut for Rocket City in the 2022 home opener at Toyota Field on April 12th against Pensacola. He appeared in 24 games for Rocket City including 23 starts and went 9-3 with a 4.85 ERA. He also added 128 strikeouts in 128 innings.
Crow was named Southern League Pitcher of the Week for the period ending Sunday, May 22. Crow made one start and was extraordinary, throwing 7.2 scoreless outings with just four hits against and one walk while striking out six to earn his second win of the season in a 4-0 victory at Birmingham at Regions Field. The 7.2 innings were a new career-high, surpassing the previous mark of 6.0 innings, set three times in 2021 for Low-A Inland Empire. He followed up that stellar performance by pitching 8 innings against Birmingham on June 25th, 2022 and giving up 1 run on only 2 Hits and striking out 5 in a Trash Pandas 8-1 Win.
In 2023, Crow went 2-0 with a 1.88 ERA in 4 Starts for the Trash Pandas. He also struck out 31 in 24 innings pitched. For his young minor league career, Crow is 13-6 with a 4.33 ERA. He also has 221 Strikeouts in 214 innings. The future is bright for the talented right-hander!
RoboScout, a tool devised by Baseball America’s Dylan White, tabbed him as an underrated pitcher in the upper levels of the minors at the conclusion of the 2023 season, noting Crow was among the top performers across all of Double-A in a small sample even despite the pre-tacked Southern League baseball.
Here’s what White wrote at the time: “I first mentioned in early May how his curveball has some of the highest horizontal sweep and spin rate of any curve in baseball. In fact, it has the most glove-side run of any curveball in the upper levels, including the majors. He doesn’t stop there. His four seam fastball — in large part due to his low release slot — has an extremely flat vertical approach angle (VAA) leading to whiffs, especially up in the zone. He also throws a high-spin slider with 10 inches of horizontal sweep that elicits above-average chases and weak contact. With a curveball bordering on double plus, an above-average four-seamer and a solid slider, Crow has mid-rotation potential assuming he can make a full recovery and rebuild his stamina. He’s one of RoboScout’s most fascinating targets to watch.“
Crow’s low-90s fastball had over 19 inches of induced vertical break in 2023 and has been up to 95 mph in the past. Opposing hitters didn’t do much damage against it in a limited sample in 2023 despite swinging at it nearly 60% of the time. The mid-70s curveball, as White pointed out, is a vicious breaker. Crow began throwing it more in 2023 after previously employing a harder slider in the low 80s.
The featured official red Los Angeles Angels Nike Dri-Fit Shorts were issued to and worn by Coleman Crow in practice in 2023 as a member of the Rocket City Trash Pandas. The Rocket City Trash Pandas are a Minor League Baseball team of the Southern League and the Double-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels. They are located in Madison, Alabama, and play their home games at Toyota Field. In 2023, Crow went 2-0 with a 1.88 ERA in 4 Starts for the Trash Pandas. He also struck out 31 in 24 innings pitched. Crow has signed the Shorts and added “Practice Worn” in black. The inside laundry tag features “C. Crow” written in silver. The Shorts are sweet and were obtained directly from Coleman Crow!
