Darien Harris is a free agent linebacker, most recently playing for the Cincinnati Bengals. Harris played his college football for the Michigan State Spartans. Harris was a two-year starter for Coach Bill McGregor at DeMatha Catholic High School in Hyattsville, Maryland. The linebacker ranked among the nation’s top outside linebackers by Scouts, Inc. In 2014, Darien Harris started 11 of 13 games at Star linebacker and ranked fifth on the team with 48 tackles and eighth on the team during the regular season with 107 production points. Darien Harris also tied for the team lead with two forced fumbles and collected 3.5 tackles for loss. (9 yards) The linebacker tied for second on the team with 24 production points at Purdue; recording six tackles, including a 2-yard loss, and his 15-yard interception return for a touchdown with 1:22 left sealed the win for MSU.
In 2015 with the Michigan State Spartans, Darien Harris stepped up and played a huge role as team leader. When senior linebacker Ed Davis suffered a season-ending injury before the Spartans could even start their season, Harris was elected as a captain over quarterback Connor Cook. Harris was one of the stars of a defense that was one of the best in all of college football. The linebacker tied a career high with two tackles for loss (2 yards) and had eight stops overall in the 2015 College Football Playoff Semifinal at the Cotton Bowl Classic vs. No. 2 Alabama. He led the team with nine tackles, including 1.5 for losses (4 yards), vs. No. 4 Iowa in the Big Ten Championship Game. Darien Harris had one of the best games of his college career recording career-highs in tackles (13), tackles for loss (2.0) and production points (35) at Nebraska. His career-best 90 tackles were good enough to put him second on the team, while his nine tackles for a loss ranked him third in that category. Harris was named a third-team All-Big Ten selection for his body of work and named MSU’s recipient of the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award.
Darien Harris was ranked among the strongest players in college football in an NFL.com article which pointed to his 450-pound bench press and 650-pound squat lift. In his Michigan State career, Harris recorded 154 tackles (13 for a loss), 1 sack, 1 interception, 4 passes defensed and 1 fumble recovery in 33 total games played from 2013-2015. He also played in every game in 2012 on special team after redshirting the 2011 season.
