Owens was a three-year starter for Coach Clyde Folsom at West Deptford (New Jersey) High School where he was a three-time All-Colonial Conference selection. He helped lead the Eagles to back-to-back South Jersey Group 2 titles in 2011-12 including a 29-game winning streak during one stretch. As a senior he rushed 134 times for 921 yards (6.9 avg.) and 14 touchdowns. For his high school, Owens had 509 career carries for 4,187 yards (8.2 avg.) and set West Deptford all-time record with 69 total TDs. Owens participated in the 2014 Offense-Defense All-American Bowl Jan. 3 in Orlando, Florida and coming out of high school was named one of the nation’s top players by 247Sports (No. 132). He also ranked among the nation’s top fullbacks by ESPN.com (No. 1), 247Sports (No. 1), Scout.com (No. 3) and Rivals.com (No. 4). The talented athlete also lettered in wrestling and won the district wrestling title at 220 pounds as a sophomore.
After initially committing to MSU as the top fullback in the country, according to 247Sports, Owens switched positions to defensive tackle. He became a crucial piece for the No. 1 run defense in the country. He gained around 50 pounds in bulking up, and at first, he relied on veterans such as Lawrence Thomas, Joel Heath and especially Shilique Calhoun, the former captain who is also from New Jersey. They not only taught him how to play the position, but to also trust and appreciate the process.
In 2016, his sophomore season with the Spartans, Owens appeared in six games to earn his first letter. He played more than 30 snaps on the defensive line and recorded a career-high two tackles vs. Rutgers. He also played a season-high 15 snaps against the Scarlet Knights. In 2017, Owens posted 11 tackles, including a 14-yard sack against Michigan in 12 games. He also doubled his career tackles total by posting career-high three tackles against Western Michigan. Owens also logged one tackle vs. No. 18 Washington State in the Holiday Bowl.
In 2018, Owens played in all 13 games (250 total snaps) and was named the defensive recipient of the MSU President’s Award, given to a senior who has shown the most perserverance. On the season, he collected 11 tackles, one forced fumble and one pass break-up. The three-year letter winner concluded his MSU football career with 24 tackles, including 1.5 sacks, along with one forced fumble and one pass break-up, in 31 career games. Owens graduated with his bachelor’s degree in sociology in December 2018.
