Description
Indigo Diaz is a pitcher in the New York Yankees Organization. A native of North Vancouver, B.C., Canada, Diaz was originally selected by the Atlanta Braves in the 27th round of the 2019 First-Year Player Draft. Diaz also starred for Team Canada in the 2023 World Baseball Classic. Diaz played college baseball at Michigan State University.
Diaz grew up in Vancouver, B.C, Canada and played for head coach Jim Chapman at Handsworth Secondary School. He earned first-team All-Province, as well as being named the Provincial Pitcher of the Year and the 2016 Provincial MVP. Diaz was named team captain as a junior and senior and was on the Handsworth Honor Roll. He also played in the summer league for the Coquitlam Reds, posting a 9-1 record with a 1.24 ERA, firing 104 strikeouts in 73 IP.
Before dominating at MSU, Diaz played two seasons at Iowa Western Community College for head coach Marc Rardin, earning honorable mention NJCAA All-American honors as a sophomore. He was also Selected to play on the United States NJCAA National team in the National Baseball Congress (NBC) World Series. He also earned Northern All-District accolades and was named First-Team All-Canadian Pitcher by Canadian Baseball Network. Diaz helped lead the Reivers to a 54-7 record, winning 36 consecutive games and the fourth-highest victory total in program history, advancing to the JUCO World Series as the Northern District D1 Region XI champions. For his IWCC career, Diaz posted a 14-2 record with a 2.93 ERA with 140 Ks in 95.1 IP in 32 appearances.
In 2019 with the Michigan State Spartans, Diaz struck out 51 in 44 innings of work. He also notched 7 saves in 25 appearances for the Spartans. On February 17th, 2019 Diaz struck out 9 in 5 innings against New Orleans. Diaz was drafted in the 27th round (817th overall) by the Atlanta Braves in 2019 (signed for $125,000)
Diaz established himself firmly as the top relief prospect in the Braves system during the second half of the 2021 season. The big (6’5, 250), hard throwing Canadian by way of Michigan State saw his velocity increase dramatically as he is now able to hit the upper 90s with consistency. Assuming he continues to develop, he could easily be in the mix for the New York Yankees major league bullpen during the 2023 season.
In 2021 with Rome, Diaz pitched in 18 games and went 4-1 with a 1.00 ERA. In 27 innings pitched, he struck out 54! He also added 5 Saves and registered a 0.67 WHIP. During the season he was promoted to Double AA Mississippi and was lights out there as well. He pitched in 14 games and went 2-1 with a 1.50 ERA. He continued his dominance striking out 29 in 18 innings for the Braves. Over parts of three minor league seasons in the Braves organization (2019, ‘21-22), he has gone 10-6 with nine saves and a 2.31 ERA (105.0IP, 59H, 31R/27ER, 49BB, 161K, 5HR) in 87 career relief outings.
Diaz made his 1st appearance for Team Canada in the World Baseball Classic on March 13th, 2023. He was dominant pitching 1.2 shutout innings against Team USA with a pair of powerhouse Ks. It was eye-opening considering the Yankees have a clear and present need for upper-level pitching depth this season.
The featured official navy, red, gray and white Stance MLB Socks were game worn by Indigo Diaz in 2022 as a member of the Mississippi Braves. The Mississippi Braves, or M-Braves as they are referred to locally, are a Minor League Baseball team based in Pearl, Mississippi, a suburb of Jackson. The team is the Double-A affiliate of the Atlanta Braves, and plays in the Double-A South. Diaz pitched in 48 Games with Mississippi and went 3-4 with a 3.08 ERA. The flamethrower also struck out 63 in 49 innings. Diaz has signed one Sock and added “GAME WORN” in silver. The Socks were obtained directly from Indigo Diaz!
