Description
Johnathan Cyprien is a free agent safety most recently playing for the Tennessee Titans of the National Football League. He was selected by the Jacksonville Jaguars with the 33rd overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft. He played college football at Florida International.
As a true freshman in 2009, Cyprien appeared in all 12 games, starting seven. He finished second on the team with 78 tackles, recorded one interception, three breakups and forced two fumbles, and earned all-conference honorable mention selection. In 2010, Cyprien led the team with 113 tackles, the fourth-best single-season total in FIU history. He also recorded three tackles for loss, one interception, six pass break ups, forced three fumbles, and recovered a fumble, and earned second team all-conference honors.
As a Junior in 2011, Cyprien started in all 13 games. He recorded 81 tackles (third-highest on the team), along with 5.5 tackles for loss and a team-high eight passes broken up, which was tied for third all-time in a season in program history, and he earned second team all-conference honors. As a senior in 2012, he served as one of the team captains for 2012, and is widely-regarded as the top safety to ever play at FIU. Cyprien once again led the team in tackles in 2012 with 93, also recorded a team-high four interceptions, along with five pass breakups, 3.5 tackles for loss and one forced fumble. He started all 12 games in 2012, as well as every game the past three seasons (2010-12), and has started the most career games at safety at FIU (45), which is the third-most amount of starts at any position for a Panther. Set school record for total tackles (365), solo tackles (213) and fumbles forced (six). He also ranks among the all-time best for pass breakups (second, 22), interceptions (fourth, 7), and fumbles recovered (fourth, 3).
The 2013 second-round pick started 15 games at SS as a rookie and ranked second on the team with 98 tackles (82 solo) and added two forced fumbles, one INT, three QB pressures, six passes defensed and one sack. Cyprien also added two special teams tackles.

In 2014, Cyprien started 15 games at strong safety and registered a team-high 111 tackles (77 solo) along with four passes defensed, five tackles for loss and three special teams tackles. On October 12th, 2014 Cyprien registered a career high 14 tackles against the Tennessee Titans. His 111 tackles ranked as third-most among NFL defensive backs.
In 2016, Cyprien had a career season due to the emergence of Tashaun Gipson as a capable free safety that allowed Cyprien to play closer to the line in the box. It also allowed him to lead the NFL with 27 run stops. Pro Football Focus gave Cyprien a run-stopping grade of 98.8 for 2016, which is the highest grade ever recorded by a safety and his 128 combined tackles were the 12th most by any player in 2016.
On March 9th, 2017, the Tennessee Titans signed Cyprien to a four-year, $25 million contract that included $7 million guaranteed and a signing bonus of $3 million. In Week 14 of the 2017 season, Cyprien made ten combined tackles and sacked Arizona Cardinals’ quarterback Blaine Gabbert in the Titans’ 12-7 loss. He finished his first season with the Titans with 57 combined tackles (38 solo), one sack, and a pass deflection in ten games and ten starts.
