Description
Mickey Gasper is a first baseman and catcher in the New York Yankees Organization. Gasper played college baseball for the Byrant University Bulldogs. He was drafted by the New York Yankees in the 27th round (817th overall) in the 2018 MLB Amateur Draft.
A catcher by trade, Gasper made each of his first 37 professional appearances in 2018 either at first base or as the Pulaski Yankees’ DH for the Yankees’ Rookie League team in Pulaski, Va. The Merrimack, New Hampshire native produced at the plate for the position, hitting .259 with nine homers, 30 RBIs and an OPS of .892. He also walked 30 times. Gasper walked more than he has struck out (27:18) since being selected in the 27th round by the Bronx Bombers this past June.
In his final three seasons with the Bryant University Bulldogs, Gasper made 117 starts at catcher. A walks machine, he was a First-Team All-Northeast Conference pick as a senior in 2018, when he hit .340 with 13 doubles and eight home runs. He posted a .468 on-base percentage and was the first catcher in program history to score 50 runs in a season. He posted back-to-back seasons of 40-plus walks and was just the second player in the school’s D1 era to eclipse over 100 bases on balls in his career. He reached base at a .469 clip over his four-year career.
In 2019, Gasper split time between the Tampa Tarpons and Charleston RiverDogs playing in 107 games combined. Gasper hit .251 with 10 HR’s and 53 RBI’s. He collected 92 hits, scored 44 runs, walked 51 times and posted a .356 OBP. For his stellar effort with Charleston, Gasper was chosen for the 60th annual South Atlantic League All-Star Game on Tuesday, June 18 in West Virginia.
In 2022 with the Somerset Patriots, Gasper hit .266/.407/.453/.860 with 8 HR’s and 27 RBI’s in 70 Games. Gasper plays both 1B and Catcher but in 2022 he spent a considerable amount less time behind the plate (107 innings) versus at 1B (492.2 innings). Gasper allowed 12 stolen bases in 15 attempts in 2022, but overall had an almost identical fielding percentage (.993 at C, .991 at 1B). In 2023 Spring Training with the New York Yankees Big Club, Gasper played in 9 Games and Hit .750 with 6 Hits in 8 At-Bats!!!
