Tom Cosgrove is a pitcher in the San Diego Padres Organization. Cosgrove was drafted in the 12th Round (No. 348) Pick By San Diego in the 2017 MLB Draft. Cosgrove played college baseball for Manhattan College where he ranks sixth in school history with 225 strikeouts. The Staten Island Native played his prep ball at Monsignor Farrell High School under the direction of Robert Mulligan.

At Monsignor Farrell High School, Cosgrove earned four letters for the Lions and was named All-State as a senior. He was the Team’s Cy Young winner in each of his final two seasons while also playing in the NYC Mayor’s Cup All-Star Game each year. He helped Farrell reach the CHSAA city championship game as a junior in 2013. He pitched to a 6-0 record and a 1.25 ERA. As a senior, he owned a 0.76 earned run average, striking out 69 batters over 55 innings.

In his freshman season at Manhattan College, Cosgrove went 1-5 with 40 strikeouts and a 4.94 ERA over 54.2 innings of work. The talented left-hander struck out at least six on four occasions while working at least six innings five times. He allowed two earned runs or less in five starts and was the MAAC Rookie of the Week after firing 7.0 scoreless innings in a win at Rutgers (3/31). Cosgrove also registered 7.0 shutout frames with a pair of strikeouts while scattering six hits in no decision against Rider (5/2) He struck out a career-high seven over 6.0 innings in his second appearance against the Pride (4/15)

In his junior year at Manhattan, Cosgrove was a Second Team All-MAAC selection matching former Milwaukee Brewers farmhand Chris Cody’s single-season school record with a MAAC-leading 105 strikeouts en route to posting a 5-7 record with five complete games and a 4.38 ERA over 84.1 innings. The Staten Island native also limited opposing hitters to a .265 average, twice was named MAAC Pitcher of the Week and recorded double-digit strikeouts four times. Cosgrove is the first Manhattan student-athlete to be drafted since Anthony Vega was selected by the Baltimore Orioles in the 30th round (pick #912) of the 2012 Major League Baseball Draft. Cosgrove is also the 15th Jasper to be selected by an MLB organization.

At the completion of the 2021 Minor League Baseball Season, Cosgrove was chosen to participate in the Arizona Fall League. The Arizona Fall League is an off-season sports league owned and operated by Major League Baseball which operates during the autumn in Arizona, United States, at six different baseball complexes. Cosgrove played as a member of the Peoria Javelinas. The Peoria Javelinas are a baseball team that plays in the West Division of the Arizona Fall League. The Javelinas play their home games in the Peoria Sports Complex in Peoria, Arizona. The ballpark is also the spring training facility for the San Diego Padres and the Seattle Mariners.

Cosgrove is a step closer now after the Padres added the reliever to the 40-man roster on November 15th, 2022. He was certainly in the mix for a big league job down the stretch as he was capping a season in which he posted a 3.72 ERA and 1.11 WHIP over 55.2 innings and struck out a career-best 13.3 batters per nine innings. Those numbers are even more impressive than they look since he spent about half the season in the high-scoring Pacific Coast League.

Cosgrove put himself on the big league staff’s radar after dropping his arm slot to three-quarters. The change, suggested late in 2022 spring training by new director pitching development Rob Marcello, led to Cosgrove morphing what had been a hammer curveball into a slider thrown off a 93-94 mph fastball. While Cosgrove stumbled initially, he quickly righted the ship and held opposing hitters to a .174 average. He was especially tough on left-handed hitters, limiting them to a .136/.240/.273 batting line over 100 plate appearances. Cosgrove will compete for a MLB bullpen in Padres 2023 Spring Training.

In his minor league career, Cosgrove has appeared in 106 games and has gone 14-16 with a 3.65 ERA. He also has 296 K’s in 266 innings and 2 Saves. In 2022, Cosgrove was 8-2 with a 3.72 ERA in 38 games between Double-A and Triple-A. He also struck out 82 in 55 Innings! The future is bright for the Padres Prospect!
